Demystifying Grant Seeking: What You REALLY Need to Do to Get Grants
Published in Hardcover by Jossey-Bass (31 August, 2001)
Authors: Larissa Golden Brown and Martin John Brown
Average review score:

A Must-Have for Proposal Writers
What do you really need to do to get grants? Get thee a system! Not just any system: this one.

Proposal writing is science and art. The art part is writing; the science part is reserach, strategy, observation and painstaking work. Demystifying Grant Seeking is about the painstaking part, but the authors skillfully render the components in managable, sutainable portions palatable for the busiest of non-profit professionals. I always recommend it to my students and clients.

Demystified!
For anyone entering the realm of grant seeking for non profits - or seeking more effective ways to do their job - Demystifying Grant Seeking is a powerful tool. This book takes the reader through the steps of setting up a usable office, making matches between agencies and foundations, writing grant applications, evaluating the process and doing it all again, tighter, quicker, better. The authors use one agency as an example, taking their audience through the entire process. No question is left unanswered, and all questions are answered patiently, graciously, and in easily understood language. This book is a great resource.

The Real Way to Write Proposals.
This is a grant-seeking system that truly works: for a newcomer, an experienced proposal writer in a too-busy office, and anyone wanting to streamline his or her efforts while improving quality and consistency in proposal writing.

Good proposal writers know that much time is spent learning about the non-profit itself -- its history, programs and plans; sometimes helping to develop programs or shaping them to enhance the appeal to funders; and collecting information and support materials to satisfy the donor and dramatize the project. The authors' checklist is critical to solid internal research.

Chapters on collecting, developing and refreshing support materials and program, donor and grants management files have excellent ideas for simplifying work and improving the delivery of quality information.

Thank goodness the authors dispell myths that "all you need is one well-written proposal" and that "you need to 'know somone' to get a grant".

Successful proposal writing is serious business; this book helps you do it well.

It's a generous gift to those who work so hard on behalf of good causes. Read it and keep it.

Empty the Ocean With a Spoon: Growing Up With the Customs, Traditions and Superstitions of a Jewish Home
Published in Paperback by Daniel & Daniel Pub (May, 1999)
Authors: Rosalie Sogolow and Jan Golden

A Wonderful Insight into Jewish Traditions
This is a lovely book that I would recommend to anyone. I'm not Jewish but you don't need to be to appreciate the author's tales of family ties and tradition. There's a lot of insight into the Jewish culture and what a beautiful culture it is. After reading books like Ms. Sogolow's it's hard for me to understand why the world is so full of anti-semitism. We could all stand to learn from a culture of people that embraces their traditions with so much pride, loyalty and love.

A beautiful, unusual book!
This is such a beautiful, memorable book! It's an interesting, unusual topic and I really enjoyed reading it. If you like to read about Jewish culture, or if Jewish culture is new to you, this is the perfect book. Highly recommended by me!

Excellent
This book touched me emotionally in many different ways. It brought back a lot of memories of growing up, and the traditions that permeated our home and our life. It also made me appreciate the fact that how I was raised was not unique. All of us were raised with superstitions, customs and traditions that effect the way we live our lives today. I actually laughed out loud in a number of sections and cried in several others.

I would recommend this book to people of all ages. For some it will bring back many memories of their childhood and young adulthood. To other's it will reflect how they lived their lives and raised their children. For other's, it is a nice link to who our parents and our grandparents (and in some cases our great grandparent's) were, and what makes us who we are today. Definitely, a must read!

The Farm Book (Golden Super Shape Book)

Great for introducing animals to your baby and toddler
I've been reading this book to my son since he was one (he's now 2) and he consistently picks this book every night to read. It's a great tool to teach your child about farm animals. The illustrations are wonderful.

A blast from the past.
This book was one of many golden books that I had in my collection. Not until I had my own children and the desire to rediscover the vintage books I once had, did I realize how much I enjoyed The Farm Book. The page where the farmer feeds the turkeys was especially impressionable to me, due to the mass amount of turkeys illustrated. What a joy to read and re-read, 2 - 3 times a day upon the request of my daughters.

Mom from Maryland
Charmingly dated illustrations (I believe this book was first published in 1964, the year I was born!) take us through a day on the farm with a Leave-It-to-Beaver family. Yes, with two toddlers in my lap, I have seen more farm books than I care to think about. This one, however, has really captured the attention of both my son and daughter. A neighbor borrowed it recently and apologized for taking so long to return it, saying that her son had become very attached to the book. I'd like to give some substantive reason why the kids are so attracted to it, but it's hard to say. Maybe because they get to see what place children have on a farm -- as opposed to typical farm books: "The cow says moo. The sheep says..." etc. In any event, the ilustrations are very appealing for one-year olds to older toddlers, and a fun glimpse of the past for moms and dads. Enjoy!

The First Book of Baking: More Than 200 Delicious Recipes That Combine Flavor With Ease
Published in Paperback by Prima Publishing (February, 1997)
Authors: Harris Golden and Jeanne Besser
Average review score:

I loved this book
Basic but never condescending, I found this to be the perfect one volume guide to quality baking. I bought it after reading just a few pages of it in the bookstore, and have made many of the recipes. The book has made me look good time and again. I have since given the book as a gift, and people I've given it to have found it invaluable. I highly recommend it.

Scrumptious desserts - buy this book!
These recipes have been as much fun to make as to eat! Thanks, Ms. Besser, for pulling together all of our childhood favorites. Even our finicky son loves baking and gobbling these treats. We've been recommending this great collection to all our friends with children. It's nice to find one cookbook that has so many easy-to-follow and delectable recipes.

A great staple for every kitchen's time-constrained chef!
As a newlywed, I could relate to the simple, delicious recipes contained in this book -- it uses easy-to-acquire, healthy, and appetizing ingredients. I don't have time to create masterpieces; I just need recipes I can depend on time and again. That's why I love The First Book of Baking -- since a friend sent it to me as a gift, I've used it several times, and been delighted by what I can create with a few yummy ingredients and Besser's value-added suggestions

Fishing (Golden Guides)

Great Reference Book
This is a great book for those who want to carry a concise reference on fishing. The book is easy to read and locating information is no problem.
I try to not leave home without a copy!

"Golden Books" continue to enlighten, thrill & educate.
"Golden Books" were great for my children and grandchildren, and now their "Fishing", "A Guide To Fresh and Salt-water", book helps me with salt-water fish identification and tackle preparation. I have recently relocated to the S.C. coast and do a lot of salt-water fishing. With all of the rules and regulations relative to fish size and limits, "Fishing" comes in handy in identifying the fish caught so as not to run afoul of the "man" by having the wrong fish in the creel.

Great!
A powerful, pocket-sized introduction to the wide world of fishing. Excellent, extensive illustrations. I loved this book when I was a kid, and it still holds up well. I recommend it for anyone, child or adult, who is new to the angling arts.

Flight of the Golden Eagle: Tales of the Empty-Handed Masters (Martial Arts for Peace)

This book shows that discipline and respect goes a long way
I've read the book Flight of the Golden Eagle and I feel that this book has a lot of hidden meanings. It speaks a lot about war. And how we can work together to solve our differences. That war is not always the answer to our problems. The one part of the book that I liked was when the instructor said to the students, "Everybody has a certain animal inside of us." And that you should try to figure out what animal you are. I feel this is true. I think I have the snake. I also learned that kids know how to stop a war and some adults do not. Children have an open mind and are willing to see the other side of the issue. Another part of the book I enjoyed was when a boy saw a tiger and her cubs in the woods. The tiger was alarmed to see the boy. But then the boy remembered a lullaby he learned from a young boy a long time ago. Then he sang it to the mother tiger. She calmed down and the boy went down the path. This shows how to handle a bad situation with a positive attitude. This book shows that discipline and respect can go a long way.

This story made me think.
In this book, "Flight of the Golden Eagle, Tales of the Empty-Handed Masters" there are many stories in one. This book tells about conflict and how to stop it. It also teaches how to clear your mind, and tells how to get out of habits and how habits are bad. It gives advice or wise sayings. This book has stories of different meanings like song of the life facing death is about a boy who wandered off in the woods and faced death then he sang a childrens lullaby he heard as a little boy to soothe the cat and put her guard down, then he kiaied and then the cat and her cubs walked away. The story I really like is the Beast of the Dark Side. This story made me think. It made me think about the beast inside of me and what animal it is and how it fights. This book will help you clear your mind and help you find the inner you...

A Small Tiger Cat
I recently put together a box of childrens books to give as a baby shower gift for a new mother. Enlisting the help of my children (17 and 18 now) I asked that they give me a list of the titles they remembered and loved the most. Katie the Kitten topped both their lists! I still have the little golden book locked away with all the other favorite childhood possessions. I will love reading it to my grandchildren someday....

Once read, never forgotten!
My son, who is almost 18 years old, still to this day can recite the entire book from beginning to end! It made that strong of an imprint in his mind and in his heart. Thank you for writing this book. I have sent it to every new mother that I have ever known.

That was the best book I ever read.
I Love this book

Gar Wood Boats: Classics of a Golden Era
At the National Boating History Symposium in Cincinnati, Ohio on March 17, 2001, "Gar Wood Boats: Classics of a Golden Era," was selected as The Classic Boating Book-of-the-Year for 2001 by the National Boating Museum, Washington, DC. This prestigious selection is made annually to the book that contributes significant original research and valuable historic information related to boat building, design and performance. As the author of this book, I am pleased to share this information with potential readers.

An Excellent Portrayal of Classic Boating
A Wonderful Portrayal of Classic Wooden Boating A one of a kind historic journey with Gar Wood, one of the pioneers of motorized wooden boating. The author's insight and knowledge of the subject is quite evident in page after page of the book. The pictures and illustrations are exquisite and beautiful to look at. This is a must read for anyone who loves classic boating, boating in general and American history, as you are taken on an epic journey with one of America's leading industrialists of a Golden Era. My kudos to the author for a job well done and express my hope that boaters across the nation will add this tome to their maritime libraries!!!

Girl in the Golden Bower

Golden Treasure of a Book
This is one of those rare perfect books that transports you completely into its pages and guides you along a twisting, enchanted path overgrown with wonders and delights until you emerge at the end, calmly satisfied from your travels. Jane Yolen's story-telling is as lovely as ever and has little rhyming spells sprinkled throughout that make the tale seem as though you are there at its unfolding. The illustrations are truly marvelous and curl up around the text which is printed on a softly glowing golden wash. Flowering vines climb up around the borders of many of the pages. The tale has a little orphaned girl set against a wicked witch who comes looking for an enchanted treasure. Before her mother dies she gives the little girl a beautiful golden comb as a keepsake. The witch puts a spell on the child to try to force her into revealing the location of the enchanted treasure that she knows has to be somewhere nearby. The animals of the forest befriend the little girl and in the end a wonderful justice occurs. The story is so precious and has a thoughtful message to suggest. This has a lot of the ingredients that you've seen in countless other fairy tales but here they seem so freshly tender and heart-touching. Treat yourself and any little ones you know to a splendid story.

Beautiful
The teaming of Jane Yolen and Jane Dyer is something I truly appreciate. Yolen, the talented author of many books for children, youth, and adults, is a master story teller. Dyer has demonstrated her ability to excel in many artistic styles. As in another teaming, Child of Faerie, Child of Earth (go find this!), the work of the two seamlessly plays off each other to create a beautiful fairy tale with equally beautiful pictures. The imagery and wording in the story itself is enough to make this a story worth reading, but the illustrations add so much more. I strongly recommend this book to parents and teachers to read to and along with a child. However, be sure to give them enough time to peruse each page, as the illustrations are rich and deserve observation.

Unusual and Fascinating
This is an unusual fairytale story with beautiful illustrations. It will take the reader and the listener to a different time and place. The descriptions are so vivid that you will imagine you can see the story unfolding.
